Operation Grebe: tackling the illegal use of bikes

Last week (23 September) marked the launch of our new campaign, ‘Spot It. Report It. We’re On It’, a public-facing initiative aimed at tackling the use of illegal bikes, including e-bikes and off-road bikes and illegal light electric powered vehicles, across South Wales.
 

Underpinned by the operational response (Op Grebe) led by ACC Williams, a period of targeted enforcement activity, dedicated days of action and intelligence-led operations will commence across the force in the coming weeks.

The campaign encourages communities to report the illegal use of bikes, while also reassuring them that this remains a top priority for South Wales Police. We know the misuse of these bikes has a significant impact on the public and officers, and we are taking proactive steps to address the issue.

The campaign will be visible across the force area both via targeted adverts in high traffic areas (bus stops, billboards etc) based on hotspot data of illegal bike activity and online via social media and our website.

The public are encouraged to make use of the reporting tool to help provide local intelligence to our policing teams to be able to tackle the use of these bikes effectively.

Appeal for information

We know that bikes – including electric motorbikes and off-road bikes – being ridden illegally is a concern to many people in South Wales.

Under Operation Grebe, we are stepping up our efforts to tackle these problems and ensure our streets and roads are safer for everyone.

We need information about bikes being ridden illegally, bikes that are not road legal, and bikes involved in criminality such as drug dealing. Riding bikes illegally puts members of the public and riders themselves in danger, can be used to commit crime, can cause criminal damage, and can be seen as antisocial behaviour.
